UPDATE – the deadline for applications for Local 118 scholarships has been extended to Tuesday May 13 at 4:30 p.m.

The draws for the Ed Russell Scholarship, Alyce Hodgkins and Steve Duzek Scholarship will take place at the General Membership meeting on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at 7 pm.

Several scholarships worth from $500 Cdn to $5,000 U.S. are available to Insulators Union Local 118 members, their spouses and children, including step-children, who are enrolled  in 2014 at a recognized trade or technical school or an accredited university, college or other post-secondary institution.

Two students from British Columbia were each winners of the $5,000 U.S. scholarships in 2013 – an amount that was increased last year.

Congratulations to Brianna Hixson of Kelowna, daughter of Local 118 member Mike Hixson and to Lauren Wilson, daughter of  of Local 118 member Dave Wilson!  Brianna is enrolled in Okanagan College in Kelowna, completing a 2-year media and cultural studies program, while Lauren is a third-year geology student at the University of Victoria.

There are 20 scholarships available through the Insulators Union each year.  They are awarded through a draw of eligible applicants and are not based on academic standing.
And three students were recipients of Local 118 scholarships of $500 each.  Two of the scholarships are named in honour of the many years of service to Local 118 – long-time former BC Insulators Contractors Association executive director  Ed Russell and Local 118 secretary Alyce Hodgkins – both of whom went above and beyond the call of duty in assisting our members.

The third Local 118 scholarship of $500 honours Steve Duzek, a long-term member of Local 118 who sadly passed away far too young.  That scholarship is funded by Pacific Rim Industrial Insulation, where Steve worked.

Eligibility for all three scholarships is limited to the children or stepchildren of Local 118 members who are enrolled in full-time studies and the awards are decided by random draw, not academic status.

Congratulations to 2013 winners Travis Repka of Kamloops for the Steve Duzek Scholarship, Matthew MacDonald of Surrey for the  Alyce Hodgkins Scholarship and Lauren Wilson of Victoria!   Travis is the son of Ed Repka and is enrolled at Thompson Rivers University, Matthew is the son of Robert MacDonald and is enrolled at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Lauren is the daughter of Dave Wilson and is studying at the University of Victoria.

If you have any questions about either set of scholarships, please call the Insulators Union Local 118 office at 604-877-0909 or 1-800-663-2738.

The Florence Bernard/Alta Miller Scholarship

This year’s Florence Bernard/Alta Miller Scholarship Fund draws will be held in conjunction with the 2014 Business Managers/Agents Conference at the end of June 2014.

All members, their spouses and children (including step-children) who will be enrolled in an accredited college, community college, or recognized trade or technical school in 2014 are eligible to enter the draw.

Winners are selected randomly through lottery draw.  Scholastic standing is not a factor in the draw.  Twenty scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each will be awarded.

Once again, the Fund will provide for special awards in the form of $1,000 grants to support special education programs for the handicapped and/or physically disabled.

Members who have a child enrolled in a recognized special education program are invited to enter this special category.  Awards in this category are donated to the recipient’s school in their honour.

All entrants this year are REQUIRED to either use the official entry form found in the Asbestos Journal, or a neatly completed 3”x 5” card.  In fairness to all entrants, only one entry per student will be accepted.  Please indicate if it is for the Regular Draw or the Special Education Grant.
